Tapering basics: plan, review, adjust

A successful taper starts with clear goals, a clinician-aligned plan, and a process to observe how each reduction feels.

1) Set goals with your clinician

Define why you are tapering, what “success” looks like, and any constraints (work, caregiving, travel). GentleStep helps capture these context notes alongside the schedule.

2) Choose a starting pace, then expect changes

Begin with a conservative reduction pace agreed with your clinician. Plan to slow down if symptoms increase or during high-stress periods. GentleStep keeps history so you can see what changed and why.

3) Stabilize and observe

After each reduction, add a stabilization window to watch how you feel. Use symptom tracking and journaling to capture observations your clinician can review.

4) Communicate clearly

Export a PDF from GentleStep before appointments so your clinician can see dates, doses, and notes. Record follow-up guidance to keep decisions clinician-led.

5) Keep safety boundaries

GentleStep never sets doses or replaces medical advice. Always consult your clinician before changing medication and seek help immediately if you experience concerning symptoms.
